Overview of College
Government College Dehra, Distt. Kangra Himachal Pradesh came into the existence in the year 2017 vide Notification No. EDN-A-Ka (1)-2/2012-Pt-I dated: IR’ May 2017 and started functioning w.e.f June 2017 with the admission to Is’ Semester of B.A and B. Com. Govt. College Dehra is affiliated to Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla -05 Vide Notification No.-1-677/2017-HPU(Acad)-A dated 21st June 2017.
Dehra is the one of the oldest tehsil in Himachal Pradesh and its history traces back to the British regime and further the town of Dehra is cited as a place where forgien invaders used this place as a DERA(Camp) for their expedition to hill states around mid 15th century. With times, the name DERA got changed to DEHRA .The official name of the town during British Raj was Dera .Another version related to the nomenclature states that the name “DEHRA” is because it has the temples of many gods and goddesses, including that of Radha-Krishana and “DEHRA” in Pahari means a temple . It was converted into a tehsil by the British in 1868 from where it started its recent journey of evolution and development.
The mythological existence of this small river side town is associated with Gopipur where a fierce battle is said to be held between Lord Krishna and the demon King Kalyavana on the other shore of river Beas. An ancient Pandav temple is the oldest temple in the town aging from the time of Mahabharta. Dehra is surrounded by the places of tourist interest . The town falls in the vicinity to the Holy shrines of Jawalamukhi,Chintapurani,Baglamukh i,Kaleshwar Mahadev,Muchkund Mahadev and Dhundeshwar Mahadev.
Apart from the famous Shaktipeeth of `Jwalamukhi’ and `Chintapurni,heritage village of Garli Pragpur and Maharana Pratap Sagar (Pong Darn), Rock-cut temple at Musroor draws thousands of tourists throughout the year to this region. Dehra is the gateway to religious and adventure tourism in Dist. Kangra.With such kind of divine ambience around, Govt. College,Dehra is all set to work for the betterment of the society and welfare of the students. Various cultural. academic and sports activities have been successfully organised throughout the year which is likely to increase the strength of the students in the college. The student centric activities such as National Service Scheme (NSS), Red Ribbon Club, Rovers & Rangers will be functional from the current academic session. The first edition of the college Magazine “VYAS-DHARA” has been successfully launched from session 2018-19.
The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) is an inalienable part of the college and is always assisting the college administration in development pursuits. Riding on the enthusiasm of making this college, a centre of academic excellence, Govt. College Dehra seeks benign co-operation from all the corners of the society so that it emerges as a centre of learning and academic excellence.
